5.3 Speakerfs view of Reference

In a natural language, whether an expression refers to a single individual, a small group or a whole set is often not clear. For instance in English the expression gthe lionh is not sufficiently explicit for us to know whether the speaker means gone particular lionh or gall lionsh. In UNL, this must be made clearly, and the following Attributes are used to make explicit what the speakerfs view of reference seems to be.

These Attributes are usually attached to UWs that denote things.

@generic

Generic concept
For example, gthe dogh and ga dogh in the following

Example
gThe dog is a faithful animal.h
gA dog is faithfulh

@def

Specific concept (Already referred)
Normally, such an UW has been already mentioned before.

Example
gThe house on the corner is for saleh

@indef

Non-specific class
In English, in many cases the indefinite article gah or ganh expresses this meaning. In Japanese aru can express this meaning and it is normally omitted.

Example
gThere is a book on the desk.h
Š÷‚Ìã‚É–{‚ª(1 û)‚ ‚é
gA student came to see me.h (‚ ‚é)Šw¶‚ª‰ï‚¢‚É—ˆ‚½

@not

Complement set
@not is always attached to the UW which is negated.

Example 1 : Negation of a Predicate Verb
gHe didnft come.h

agt ( come.@entry.@past.@not, he )

Explanation
@not is attached to the UW of the Predicate Verb.

Example 2 : Negation of a Predicate Noun
gHe is not a gentleman.h

aoj ( gentleman.@entry.@not, he )

Explanation
@not is attached to the UW of the Predicate Noun

Example 3 : Negation of a Predicate Adjective
gHe is not English.h

aoj ( english.@entry.@not, he )

Explanation
@not is attached to the UW of the Predicate Adjective.

@order

obj ( exist.@entry, we )
plc ( exist.@entry, :01.@def )
mod:01 ( floor.@entry, basement )
